Socio-Economic situation of the Countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States in January 2008.

     In January 2008 the tendency of economic growth which was observed in the past year remained in economy of the Commonwealth countries. However, growth rates of the main macroeconomic indicators slowed down in comparison with rather high base of the previous year. At the same time the greatest slowing down was characteristics of industrial production, in particular, in Kazakhstan, Russia, Ukraine. Gross domestic product increased in January of the current year in comparison with January of the last year on average for the CIS countries by 7% (in January 2007 - by 10%), industrial output by 5% (by 10%), cargo transportation -  by 4% (by 8%), retail turnover - by 15% (by 15%). In the majority of the Commonwealth countries decrease of growth rates in January of the current year in comparison with December of the previous year in connected with decrease of the number of working days as well as with usual annual decrease of business activities at the beginning of the year.
